Here at Pinewood Castle we try to keep track of the Saints' feast days. We read about their lives, add them to our timeline of history and pray for their intercession.
Although there are dozens of saint books out there, I personally have found it a challenge to find a comprehensive book of saints the meet the following criteria:
- a colored illustration on one page and biographical information on the opposite page
- biographical information on a children's level
- birth and death dates
- a saint for every day of the calendar year, in order
Here are books I have tried thus far:
The Children's Book of Saints meets #1,2 and 3, but the saints are in alphabetical order:
The Illustrated Lives of the Saints meets #1, 2 and sometimes 3. The saints are in calendar order, but there are only 3-10 saints for each month and NONE for the month of February.
The Father Lovasik Book of Saints meets #1, 2 and 3 but this is a twelve part set and I find it difficult to thumb through all twelve to find the saint I am looking for.
Once Upon a Time Saints offers information in a charming story form with about 33 saints in alphabetical order.
I also love these two Little Book of Saints written on a perfect level for wee ones, but there are only ten saints in each volume:
So, what I have been using. The Saints for Young Readers for Everyday Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. This book meets #2, 3 and 4. The reading level is ages 9-12, so I read it out loud for now. There are only occasional pen and ink illustrations:
For illustrations I am in the process of finding holy cards for as many of the saints I can find and storing them in this wooden box with tabbed dividers:
The children can find the holy card for the Saint of the Day and insert him or her into a postcard holder.
I enlisted the children's help in decorating the box and her is how it turned out:
In the meantime, dear readers, if you know of a saint book that meets all four criteria, please comment below and enlighten me!! I would love to know!
