Our adventures with Gnomes and Gnumbers have been mostly successful. The major stress has been writing the lessons in the unlined main lesson notebooks. They don't start at the left side of the page, run out of room, make mistakes and cannot erase the crayon, etc. Breathe, Tracy, breathe! It's a bit challenging. I think we're learning how to adapt.
The number pouches (like the sound pouches) have been a huge hit, though borrowed from another blog. Here's a peek at their contents:
Doing math with Gnomes and a story has captured the children's imagination more than I ever thought possible. To review Roman numerals I continued the story about the Gnomes and the jewels, spoke in a Gnome's voice and gave each child a job: one was to draw a card with the number such as "eleven", one placed a marker on the "11" on the hundreds chart, one made the Roman numeral "XI" with the Handwriting Without Tears wooden pieces and the same child who drew the card found 11 jewels (a basket of ten plus one more). The kids loved this game and could have played it all morning had I let them!
