A new school year has commenced and the best thing so far is our new room!
I scoured blogs and Pinterest for weeks until I found a combination that would work for us.
This is not a large room - only about 10x12, but it seems so much larger and much more usuable, even with a big table.
First, we (Joe) repainted the walls. Each wall had been a different color (yellow, red, blue, and green) and now all the walls are Lime Granita. This room faces north, so even though the color seems a bit bright, I think it will be a sanity saver come November.
The desk is made from two black/brown Linnmon tops. Each one is about 78" x 24" so it barely fits in this room. The larger size gives everyone more legroom and allows the chairs to be pushed in, so we almost have the recommended three feet around all sides of the table.
Some blogs I visited recommended a glass top for the desk for stability, to cover the crack and protect the surface, so we'll eventually add one.
The desktop carousel holds shared supplies, but we also use our top drawer for some of our own stuff.
The desktops are sitting on four Alex drawer units, positioned so each side has access to their own drawers. The kids keep their workbooks in them, so they double as a work box system and free up shelf space.
We sprung for four Jules swivel chairs in white. The kids love these - it helps them figit a bit. We had to make some rules about how far one is allowed to roll. They also have to learn to swivel without banging the edge of the desk top.
The walls are still a work in progress.Visually, it's not as cohesive as I would like, but everything is pretty much where I want it to be on a practical level.
Ribba ledges are holding last year's back-to-school self portraits.
We have a new calendar to help organize our crazy schedules and a white board on the wall - a first for us.
This little corner holds some of my stuff and flashcards (in the yellow tray).
The room looks so much bigger without curtains! Our "clothes line" moved to the window and awaits fresh art projects.
This wall features new maps and clipboards with weekly assignment sheets for each student.
The third best thing about the room (after the paint and the desk/table) is the new light fixture. After a long search I found it at WalMart on sale for $40! I really wanted a cool brushed nickel warehouse pendant fixture, but the semi-flush mount gives much better light for the whole room, rather than the bottom half.
I am loving this room. Bring it on, dark days of winter!
