We thought she was due at the end of January.
She crept up on us and said, "BOO!" a few weeks early.
She's still surprising us on a daily basis.
She's the kind of headstrong kid who is led by her wild horses. Not in bad ways, she just . . . proceeds, especially in the kitchen.
We try not to tease her too much about the peach crisp with a 1/2 C of cinnamon instead of a 1/2 teaspoon. (It's dang hard not to though)
Her birthday sneaks up on me every year. I am all done with sugar and have no interest in cake or ice cream or more parties. I just want to take the brittle tree down, hunker down by the fire with our family, and hibernate.
She wants to keep the tree up for her birthday and invite everyone she knows over for a party.
We struck a compromise.
This year she asked to go to the American Girl store to pick out a doll she earned for practicing 100 days in a row. She assured me it could double as a birthday gift. She's like that.
So we also invited a friend and splurged for dinner at the in-store Bistro, where kids can check out a doll with which to dine.
This place is way over the top for me. Pretty freakish yet fascinating.
I mean, a doll hair salon? Please. How superfluous.
But she loved it, and I love her, so I was glad to take her and I even tried to enjoy the extravagance of it.
My son didn't even cry about being in that store this time. Maybe because we took him to the Lego store first.
Satisfied, he was such a sport - he even checked out a boy doll to eat with!
Amazing. Simply amazing.
The view of the amusement park out the window helped make the experience bearable for him.
She asked me to wrap up her new doll, the accessories, and some earrings from Claire's. I did, so she knew everything she was getting. No surprises this year.
Sanguine to the core, she still wanted a home party. The kind with a gaggle of friends and balloons and party hats.
But the high on her big day? Subzero!
I'm quite sure no one wanted to venture into the Polar Vortex, even for a special girl like her.
I'm thinking a half-birthday party in July would be better attended.
