In spite of feeling pretty terrible the last two months, there have been some days when I have felt well enough to be fairly productive. Here are some of my very small successes accomplished (thank you God) during my first trimester:
We were sent home from my in-laws with a huge bag of apples. After sitting in the corner of the kitchen for a week, we finally spent an afternoon dealing with them. As my dh ran the apple/peeler/corer/slicer, I baked seven apple desserts and put some in the freezer.
Most evenings these days I turn in right after I force myself to eat dinner. I psyched myself up to attend a homeschooling mom's support meeting last week and brought one of the desserts, the Sour Cream Apple Squares. They were a hit. I didn't fall asleep during the meeting but was back to feeling terrible the next day after staying up late. It was totally worth it to get out!
All this nausea has killed my sweet tooth. I haven't gained a a pound, even though my tummy is already sticking out.
Autumn blew in the cool crisp air we have all been waiting for. We took a fall break to execute the bi-annual seasonal clothing exchange. I took inventory and filled out their wardrobes on a power shopping trip to Kohl's. Lands' End got the order for my eldest's winter gear. We need the good stuff up here.
I splurged for some new maternity tops and a few pretty necklace and earring sets. I still like cotton v-neck tees and will never understand why so many maternity tops are cut so low or sport horizontal strips. (I would love to know what your favorite maternity top is and where to find it, bty)
I asserted myself. We liked the new violin teacher we were assigned to, all except the one foot strip of dog hair and dead insects bordering the baseboards of her living room. After being there an hour and a half, I felt unusually nauseous. I spoke up to the director of the studio, delicately and respectfully. We will be placed with another teacher beginning next week.
I scheduled a hair appointment the morning of my next real date with dh. We go to A Prairie Home Companion every October for our birthdays. I've been listening to the show since high school, never guessing that I would actually live in Lake Wobegon territory.I didn't make anything fancy, but did manage to serve a blackberry breakfast on the feast of St. Michael, as well as angel hair pasta and angel food cake for dinner. The cake fell, though - I still can't find a glass bottle with a skinny enough neck for turning the tube pan upside down on.
Nothing fancy for the feast of St. Therese either - just planning some easy quiche and those little French schoolboy cookies. I printed out these recipes for my October file - maybe next year! And finally, I kicked the Zofran habit! I was in rough shape for a few days, but am finally keeping my meals down with the help of prayer, sea bands, and sound advice from the 4Real ladies who have been there. It took four or five days for the unpleasant side effect to go away. Finally, I feel better than I have since July. Hopefully now at 13 weeks I will turn the corner, actually feel thankful for this new blessing to our family and quit whining about how hard it is to be pregnant.
I think I even remembered to thank my dh for all his extra help the last two months. He has taken over the whole evening routine, including the dishes and sometimes puts a high protein breakfast in the crockpot (thanks, Paula! More great tips found on 4Real). He has kept the kitchen in good order and cleaned the stove top more than once. He has willingly gone to the store at late hours for this remedy or that, risking his life by driving through thick fog on county roads, dodging deer, all while I was moaning in agony on the bathroom floor.I will have one more small accomplishment to report by next week, but right now I have to keep a very fun secret!
It’s important for moms to recognize that all the small successes in our days can add up to one big triumph. So on Thursday of each week, we do exactly that.
